Pea and Drake's small frozen semen litter is here!

We welcomed our two miracle babies, a bitch and a dog, both fawn and white, into the world on 5/3/08.
"Big Jelly", Diablesse Gelato Says Surrey Hill, and his sister, "Sorbet", Diablesse Surrey Hill Say Sorbet, are fat and thriving and spoiled as only puppies from a small litter can be.
It is astonishing to think that we have baby Whippoorwill Moonstone grandchildren who will be in puppy classes in 2009...fully 30 years after we brought Stoney home as a puppy.  Much has changed in that time but not our love for Whippets.

9.5 week old photos of the puppies...

Some history...

Some months ago, thanks to our VERY good friend Kristen Fredericks, our Pea was taken down to be surgically-inseminated with some old semen collected in 1991.  Unfortunately, this semen didn't go into the freezer at the same viability as they are able to easily collect today, and we knew that our chances of a large litter were slim, but I was determined to try to get puppies out of this combination because I felt that the sire would be one I would definitely want to use on her if he were still alive.  There was only enough semen saved for three breedings from this dog and his owner was generous enough to part with one of them.

Kristen is fortunate to have a wonderful vet and clinic which is also renowned for Canine Reproductive services--Springfield Veterinary Clinic outside of Richmond, VA.  She drove many times to get Pea to her cardio clearance, her FIVE (yeah, that's right-FIVE) progesterone tests, and her pre-breeding health screenings.  Many thanks to Kristen for all her help.  Pea received great care but they put her chances of conception at no better than 50-50. I admit I was very depressed at first by these odds, but we elected to go ahead. I put my full trust and faith in the expertise of the specialist and in my conviction that this really was a breeding worth trying for.

And finally, the surgical insemination with the 17 year old sperm.  I had a sick feeling in the pit of my gut as I wondered if the great expense incurred would result in no puppies.  This is a big deal to someone like me who is used to large litters and has the $10,000 dog in Tabitha who has taken up most of my savings.  Leila was nice enough to agree to play along and split everything as she always does. Nobody could have a better and more supportive co-owner/co-breeder than I have in Leila.

Here is the proud sire, or at least, I am sure that he WOULD be proud if he were still around....
