Surrey  Hill  Whippets
Archive - part 2

Due to the large number of pictures featured in this part of the site, we decided to split it up in two pages: Archive 1 & Archive 2. The text below is the same for both pages but the dogs are all different.

Here you will find pictures of the Whippets we have owned, bred, or co-bred which have gone on to be used in breeding programs and might reasonably be expected to be found in some pedigrees of dogs who are currently in competition or in the hands of fellow breeders. Most of these dogs have sadly passed on, but a few of the males are still standing at stud with their current owners, and we have included a link to the appropriate website for those who are still in use. It is our intention that this section of our website serve as a resource for people who are doing pedigree research and want to know what some of those ancestors in their pedigrees looked like. I welcome correspondence concerning these Whippets of our past, and will be happy to share information about their virtues and faults to the extent that I can. Not all of these photos are flattering of the dogs or were taken at their mature peak, but I have tried to find an honest photo of each. I lost many of my best albums in a storage building fire six years ago, and so if you have a photo of any of these dogs which you feel is better, or a photo of a dog bred or owned/co-owned by either Karen Bowers Lee or Carolyn J. Bowers that you feel should appear somewhere on this site, then please share it with me and I will be more than happy to add it. My ambition is to eventually display at least one photo of every single Surrey Hill owned or bred dog which ever produced a litter here, and most of our champions.

The Whippets who currently live with us can be found in the Current Dogs section of the site, and these do include some who are now retired from all breeding and competition, but who are important parts of our program and our family life. Future hopefuls and current competitors bred by Surrey Hill which are active right now can be found in the News section.

At the bottom of this section, there is a gallery of champions and other winners that we feel represent our breeding program particularly well and were very special to us, but who were never bred on from for a variety of reasons. We invite you to look at them as they are closely related to a number of dogs which were used, and therefore useful to study despite having no descendents of their own.

"Pungo"
Dual Ch. Surrey Hill's Pep Talk CR OTR TRP DPC
(Barkley x Dawn)

Pungo was a good boy who never did anything but give us all a lot of pleasure and love.

 "Riggins"
Am.Can.Ch. Surrey Hill HMS Bedfordshire TRP DPC

(DC Paris Say You Will LCM x Spiral)

"Riggins" finished with some really good wins in Canada, ably presented by Linda Buchholz. He is shown in this photo going BOS over 9 champions at the Stampede City Whippet Specialty under English breeder/judge Patsy Gilmour. Riggins is ASFA-ptd. and lives in VA with Kristen Frederick, co-owned by Karen Lee.
!!Riggins continued his winning ways under breeder/judges!!  He was WD at the AWC Eastern under Lori Nelson (Wildfire), and WD/BOW for his second US major at the Potomac Hound Show under Kent Delaney.  He finished in 2006 handled by his breeder, his owner, or by Joseph Buchanan, who always does such a wonderful job with our Surrey Hill dogs.  Riggins is shown coursing with our Maura.  He is nearly an ASFA F.Ch., despite a severe injury to his shoulder as a yearling, which postponed both his showing and running careers.  He's all healed up and ready to complete his performance titles, now that his show titles are complete.

FLASH!! Riggins finishes his F.Ch. at the PHAST trials. He also won BOS over multiple specials at the Potomac Hound Show.

"Crystal"
Can.Ch. Surrey Hill's Crystal Wave
(DC Paris Say You Will LCM x Spiral)

"Crystal" was a star at her final CWA race meet--winning ARX points both days and the match one of the two days. Beauty and speed are always something to crow about! I am very proud that she is coming into her own as a two year old.
Flash=> Crystal debuts in lure coursing with a 3rd and a 1st in full stakes, her first weekend out coursing in Canada. 60 pts in two days is worth a brag!

Crystal now a CWA meet winner with 12 ARX points  She also finished her Can F.Ch. title with ease!  A 2006 breeding is being contemplated to the handsome and versatile Am.Can.Ch. Counterpoint Jungle Drums Can.F.Ch..  See the Swiftsure home page for updates.  We are looking forward to seeing how this planned match between two athletic and breed-typical Whippets turns out--inquiries to Linda Buchholz.

"Tyler"
Can.Ch. Swiftsure Surrey Hill Lunacy Can.F.Ch. ARX DPCX
(Gilly x Selena)

"Tyler" finished his ARX/DPC at the same meets. We are very pleased for Linda and Steve.
To see more about Tyler and Crystal and their relatives at Swiftsure, or to find out more about having your Whippet shown in Canada by Linda, go to the Swiftsure home page.

"Aubrey"
Ch. Surrey Hill Blue at the Mizzen

(Can.Ch. Airescot Gold Field x Sanibel)

"Aubrey" finished in October, with four majors. Congratulations, Cal Perry and Justin Smithey on Aubrey's championship!!! Aubrey's first weekend of lure coursing went very well, with a 4th and a 2nd in Georgia. Justin said he had a great time coursing and is definitely hooked!

"Justine"
Ch. Surrey Hill's Poetic Justice

(Ch. Chelsea Just One Look x Katie)

Group-winning Justine went on to produce champions for Renee Clayton's Claymar kennels in Alaska.

"Carmen"
Ch. Surrey Hill's Calamity Jane F.Ch. SC

(Ch.Highlight Bold'N Spectacular x Moxie)

Carmen's daughter, Sanibel, has been a fine winner and producer. You can see her descendents elsewhere on this site, or at Silkrock.

"Bonnie"
Ch. Surrey Hill's Scotch Bonnet SC

(Ch. Patric's Jammin' Drarig x Dawn)

Bonnie's lineage continues in South America through her son, Braz.Ch. Surrey Hill Hands Storm Surge, who has been a useful producer, and in the US through her descendents at Hand's Whippets.

"Coquina"
Am.Can.Ch. Surrey Hill's Coquina SC

(Ch. Patric's Jammin' Drarig x Dawn)

"Coquina" was finished by us, but her breeding career occurred at Allerei, where she produced three AKC champions for the Simonsens, all males and all have been used at least once.

"Raleigh"
Ch. Surrey Hill Raleigh Allerei
(Ch. Whimsy's on a Wing N' A Prayer x Coquina)

Raleigh finished with BOS in Sweeps wins. He sired one litter, for Bar-O Whippets, which did result in champion sons. He is happily neutered and retired to the couch with Dr. Joel Fischer and his partner, Kenny Mayne, at Mordecai in Wake Forest. Joel and Kenny wanted a sweet and cuddly house Whippet to replace Katie's brother who had passed on, and Raleigh was the perfect candidate.

"Lars"
Ch. Surrey Hill One Step Beyond

(Ch. Chelsea Champagne x Dawn)

"Lars", a group winner and champion producer, lives in retirement at Sunrise with owner, Dawn Sutherland.

"Ava"
SBIS&Select Am.SBIS Can.Ch.
Allerei's Ain't Misbehavin' F.Ch. ROMX SC

(Houston x Allerei's Sharizade F.Ch.)

What can we say about Ava? She won the AWC National, multiple regional specialties in the USA and Canada, the Kahirah Cup in ASFA Lure Coursing, and is the dam of 11 AKC Champions, including two all-breed Best in Show winners. I guess all we can really say is THANK YOU, Si and Jeanne, for agreeing to part with her!

"Liza Jane"
Ch. Surrey Hill Casual Lies
(Ch. Gold-Dust Joint Venture x Ava)

Ava's closest lookalike daughter in all of her litters, "Liza Jane" went to live with Russ Thorne, for whom she produced at least one litter.

"Jacob"
Ch. Surrey Hill Rogue of Chelsea

(Ch. Chelsea Mesmorize x Ava)

"Jacob" was RWD and Best Puppy in Show at the 1990 AWC National. Jacob was a sire who was tragically underused. In his first litter, he produced five champions for Topaz Whippets, including a dog who sired two BIS winners for Sporting Fields. In his last litter, he sired the #1 Show Whippet in the US for 2002--Multi-BIS, SBIS Ch. Allerei's Shannon. Really a pity he got so few chances at stud.

"Barkley"
Ch. Surrey Hill´s Firing Line F. Ch.

(Ch. Bo-Bett's Wild Tobiano ROMX x Ava)

"Barkley" seemed to be doing such a nice job as a sire for his owner, Julie Ward, that I bred to him twice, myself! You can see more of Barkley and his kids at Bayberry Whippet's website. Barkley, his sister Sami (below), and BIS-winning brother Prime Time were co-bred on lease with Jeanne Simonsen and raised at Allerei.

"Sami"
BIS Ch. Allerei's Northern Exposure

(Ch. Bo-Bett's Wild Tobiano ROMX x Ava)

"Sami" was Junior-owner-handled to Best In Show wins by Karen Walker, and produced a litter for them out of Ch. Starline's Reign On. She was also a Specialty BOS winner. Though she spent almost all of her show career being campaigned in Alaska, her win record at the Group and Best in Show level was certainly something we are proud of.

"Angela"
Ch. Allerei's Who's The Boss F.Ch.

(Ch. Bo-Bett's Wild Tobiano ROMX x Ava)
"Angela" - another dual-titled whippet for Allerei Farms, and a champion-producer. Four of the six puppies born in this litter co-bred on lease with Jeanne Simonsen finished their bench championships.

"Striker"
Ch. Surrey Hill Strike the Gold, ROM

(Ch. Gold-Dust Joint Venture x Ava)

"Striker" has been a very good sire for Diane Bowen, and you can see more of him and his descendants at the Oxford Whippets home page. He is from a litter of five, including four AKC champions and one ASFA F.Ch.

"Stella"
Ch. Surrey Hill Stella D'Oro SC

(Barkley x Dawn)

"Stella" was WB at the AWC Southern, and is retired to the couch with co-owner/co-breeder, Chris Strom. Although we have chosen not to go forward with her after her one litter, we still consider her one of our very best homebred bitches and several of her pups are still active in showing or performance events.

"Splash"
Ch. Surrey Hill's Splashdown SC

(Godfrey x Jobyna)

"Splash" was finished and bred from by George and Marie Hand, Hand's Whippets.

"Moe"
Select Ch. Allerei's Sand and Sea

(Ch. Allerei's Rodeo Drive x Coquina)

"Moe" was a Select Award Winner at the San Diego National and has a young litter just entering the ring.

"Spiral"
Can.Ch. Surrey Hill's Smithereens
F.Ch. ARX CR OTR DPCX
(Gilly x DC Chelsea Selena F.Ch. ARX CRX DPCX CD)

"Spiral" was tragically lost to us while still quite a young bitch. She was both fleet and sound, and we were so lucky that she gave us a beautiful litter before she was killed. Her daughters will be a big part of our future plans. If you think your gate is securely latched, check it again, just to make sure. Not a day goes by that I do not think of her.

"Crystal"
Ch. Surrey Hill's Irresistable CD JC F.Ch. NA NAJ CAVX
(Ch. Bo-Bett's Wild Tobiano ROMX x Surrey Hill Topaz Iriquois)

"Crystal" was one of two champions from this litter out of a mostly unshown Houston/Tiger Lily daughter. She proved an all-around competitor for owners/trainers Meribeth Metavia and Tom Quinn, and is the dam of multi-titled offspring.

"Kiley"
Am.Can.Ch. Chelsea Cayenne Am.Can.CD
(Ch. Whippoorwill Raisin Cain x Ch. Spectre White Hot ROM)
Bought as a pup from Chelsea's first Whippet litter, "Kiley" was co-owned by David Troutt. He sired only one litter, and from this litter came a single champion, but that champion is behind many of today's top show Whippets by virtue of being the granddam of top sire Ch. Chelsea Gold Rush of Keynote. So, Kiley sure is in a lot of pedigrees, and I wanted to include his picture here in our history section. He was a very fun, bright, and determined dog who loved to work, he came into our lives when we needed a dog like that, and he lived on well into his 16th year.
